What does CARMMHA do?

CARMMHA is a team of marine mammal health scientists conducting cross-discipline research that includes veterinary assessments of managed animals, field assessments with wild populations, and integrative statistical modeling to understand how the DWH oil spill affected Gulf of Mexico marine mammal health.

Previous studies have shown that the Deepwater Horizon Spill oil exposure led to a variety of negative health effects in marine mammals and other marine species. However, there are several questions that linger regarding the long-term impacts to populations and timelines for population recovery.

Our research will be important for ongoing restoration efforts, and we will prioritize sharing our findings with the general public, resource managers, the broader scientific community, and Gulf of Mexico community youth groups.

This research was made possible by a grant from The Gulf of Mexico Research Initiative. As our research progresses, data will be publicly available through the Gulf of Mexico Research Initiative Information & Data Cooperative (GRIIDC).
